IMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video)

As one of the highest-rated and most-downloaded WP7 apps, IMDb might just be the most popular yellow app in the world. It's a nice yellow, though, a golden, orangey tone. Anyway, I digress: IMDb for Windows Phone 7 is excellent. It provides, with a couple of flicks, everything a film buff might need.

In the video review (after the break), I take a quick stroll through each of IMDb's main features. If you set your location, you can see the movie screening times at local cinemas. Like the IMDb website, the app's prime focus is on exploring the details of movies (and TV shows), and the app certainly doesn't disappoint in that regard; the app might actually be better than the website! You can watch trailers, browse cast photos, check out related news -- it's fast, easy and pretty.

In many ways the app mirrors the website. You can browse the top 250 films, the bottom 100, the winners of the Best Picture Academy Award, this week's top movies and TV shows... and so on. It's so good in fact that, from now on, I'll be using the app instead of the website.

The only flaw with IMDb for WP7 is that you can't book cinema tickets directly. As far as I'm aware, not even Flixster for WP7 -- IMDb's chief rival -- offers this functionality. Needless to say, the first movie app to offer such a feature will decimate the competition.

The video review is after the break.

Playboy releases over 650 issues spanning 56 years on a big, black hard drive

Playboy Hard Drive
Last Christmas it was 120 years of National Geographic, and this year it's an equally beautiful but very different vista: 56 years of Playboy on a 250GB hard drive. That link is safe to click, but the online shop linked from there isn't. There are also some 'free samples,' if you want to check out the 'digital magazine' experience before you buy.

The archive, which costs $299.95, features every single issue of the magazine from December 1953 through to December 2009, from Marilyn Monroe and Ursula Andres, to Drew Barrymore and Denise Richards. This isn't just an archive of the Playmates, either: all of the articles and adverts are included too.

Scraper for Chrome lets you easily create spreadsheets from Web data

scraper

Scraping is a technique whereby a website or tool extracts select information from another website. For example, when you type a difficult word into Google and instantly see a definition for that word from some Web dictionary, that's because Google "scraped" that information from the dictionary. The term (and practice) has some negative connotations, because scrapers can be used to steal blog content and for other nefarious purposes. But as Google (and many others) show, it doesn't have to be used for evil.

Scraper is a Chrome add-on that somewhat simplifies the process of scraping information from a webpage. I say "somewhat" because you still have to know XPath or jQuery selector syntax, but that's pretty easy to master if you know a bit of HTML.

Once the extension is installed, you can right-click any page element and select "Scrape similar". You then get a window with a single table row, and the XPath expression leading to the exact element you've selected. It is now up to you to generalize that expression so as to get a broader match. As you can see in the screenshot, it was quite simple to write an expression that yields all of the post headlines and links on the DLS homepage.

Once you have the information you wanted, you can click Export to Google Docs and get a spreadsheet with all of your data in tabular form, ready for further processing.

Scraper is very much a work in progress; while jQuery selector syntax is supported, you only get the XPath expression filled in automatically (and it's too specific). Also, it does not support saving expressions as templates, so every time you want to use it, you have to re-build the XPath expression you need. I'm sure this will all get fixed in due time.

Over the counter, spray-on stem cell treatment could heal burns on the go

Research at the University of Utah could lead to burn treatment on the go that makes use of your body's own cells. Surgeons Amit Patel and Amalia Cochran are researching the use of stem cells in conjunction with several chemicals as a spray-on jelly which has, in early testing, shown to accelerate the healing process of burns. While the team is starting with small burns, its goal is to be able to provide fast and effective, actual regeneration of a patient's own cells to be grafted onto large area burns. Video of the project is after the break.

PeerBlock 1.1 arrives with some important updates

PeerBlock is a great way to keep unwanted P2P connections (as well as advertising and spyware) from getting through to your Windows computer, and it's just gotten better with the release of PeerBlock 1.1.

Among the key additions are a completely revamped installer (complete with a signed driver), an updated list manager for easier settings tweaks, and a list verification feature to prevent file corruption. The signed driver is an important addition, since it makes the installation process much easier for users of 64-bit Windows. PeerBlock has also switched from the PeerGuardian blocklists to iBlocklist.com, which the developers say are much faster and more reliable. There's also an option to display allowed connections -- though you should expect an additional hit on your CPU if you switch it on.

GameString demos its streaming, custom World of Warcraft UI by raiding on an HTC Desire (video)

We're still not ready to apply the label "Gaming 3.0" here (or to anything, for that matter), but despite its boasts, GameString's making a compelling case for cloud-based play time. We've already seen the company bring World of Warcraft to Google TV, but now the company's showcasing its take on a challenge we've seen a few times before -- streaming a playable version of WoW to a mobile phone. (Gotta get 'em out of the house somehow.) The trick here is a streamlined UI overlay that makes for a every touch-friendly experience; there's translucent "thumbstick" spots and larger buttons for spells. The setup in question here is its Adrenalin Host Server from approximately 80 kilometers away (geographically) and an HTC Desire running over a home network that's 2Mbps down / 2Mbps up. And while there's some notable lag and parts of the interface that's still too tiny to really use, it's still an Alpha build that seems functional for all but the most intense of moments. See it for yourself after the break.

Google Takes Steps To Combat Copyright-Infringing ?Bad Apples?

The web and copyright sometimes butt heads as we learned from the recent Cooks Source fiasco. Google often find itself at the center of these copyright battles and DCMA takedown requests. It looks like Google has made adjustments to procedures to help respond to infringing content by "bad apples", and address copyright issues that involve Google as a search engine. Google says it is receiving a growing number of copyright requests to take content down and will now act on these requests within 24 hours. The search giant is in the process of building tools to improve the submission process for DMCA requests, particularly with Google's blogging platform Blogger and search portal.

WidgetBlock for Chrome blocks annoying social widgets, makes Web faster

widgetblock

The Web is all about being social these days. When you take this "social" buzzword and reduce it down to brass tacks, you often end up with a bunch of widgets, buttons and other annoyances crowded around the content you're actually interested in reading.

WidgetBlock is a Chrome add-on that makes short work of a whole bunch of common widgets and buttons for social services. In one fell swoop it eradicates the presence of Facebook, Twitter, Meebo, Digg, Buzz, and a ton of other omnipresent Web 2.0 services. Of course, if you happen to like some of these you can switch them on selectively.

When I tested WidgetBlock, it made the site I was trying to load noticeably faster (about two or three times as fast, in fact). It also makes the Web feel a tad "cleaner", at least for me. Definitely recommended.

Path Update Allows You To Upload Any Photo ? With An Honest Twist

Path launched two weeks ago with a swell of buzz. Then came the backlash. It was swift and merciless. "It's a social app that discourages large-scale social sharing ? WTF?," seemed to be the main complaint. Well, love it or hate it, Path is sticking to its, yes, path. But an update tonight brings a few nice updates. First and foremost, you can finally use pictures taken outside of the app. Previously, you could only load up the app, hit the camera button, and take a picture to share on the service on the spot. The reason for this was that they wanted to make sure your path was being shared in realtime from where you really were. But the latest version of the app, 1.0.2, has a new "Library" button in the camera area. Hitting this allows you to pick any photo from your camera album. But read that carefully ? it has to be from your camera album. In other words the picture still has to be one taken with your iPhone camera. Again, there's a reason for this.
