Oh, sure -- Pentax may have thrown one in gratis on its K-7, and Nikon has done the same on its D3S, but none of that really matters if you're the proud owner of a Canon, now does it? For those fed up with accidentally moving their mode dial during a critical shoot, Canon is now offering a chargeable service for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D cameras. For the tidy sum of $100, the outfit will install a Mode Dial with a center-located lock button -- the goal here is to prevent the wheel from moving during "normal camera operation," while simultaneously milking an extra Benjamin out of the outfit's loyal customer base. 'Course, there's a glass half-full / half-empty way to look at this. You could bang on Canon for not including this from day one, or you could be grateful to have the option at all. Your move, cynic.

Verizon LTE plans start at $50/month for 5GB of data (update)

And here we go: Verizon just announced its 4G LTE pricing and full list of coverage areas. Some 38 markets will go live when the switch is flipped on December 5, including Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and LA, and pricing starts at $50/month for 5GB of data, with an $80/month plan for 10GB. Overages run $10 per GB, which isn't insane, and there's also supplemental coverage in around 60 airports. Check the full PR after the break.

Update: Some highlights from today's press conference:

• More modems will be coming out within "weeks" and are all backwards compatible with its EV-DO network.
• Verizon will talk about "consumer-oriented devices" (translation: phones) at CES.
• The modems are capable of 4G-to-3G handoff, but not 3G-to-4G -- they'll stay on 3G until you're done transmitting data.
• The LTE and 3G plans might integrate, according to CTO Tony Melone, but probably not until 2012 or 2013.
• It sounds like the modems will only be available in stores on December 5th -- no third-party retailers at first.

?Boring? Couple Beats Google In Court, Is Awarded $1

Back in April 2008, married couple Aaron and Christine Boring filed suit against Google for "intentional and/or grossly reckless invasion" of their privacy, because a Street View car drove down their Private road and snapped some photos of their house. Aside from giving the press an opportunity to go pun-crazy, the case has been notable for its longevity: most of the charges, which included negligence, were thrown out in February 2009, but Boring v. Google came back for an encore this year. The lone remaining charge? Trespassing. Now, over two and a half years after the case got started, a judge has handed down her consent judgement, ruling that that Google was indeed guilty of Count II Trespass. The Borings are getting a grand total of $1 for their trouble. Ouch.

Google Refine lets you fix and handle huge, messy sets of data

Google has just introduced a new product, and this time it's a PC application (with a browser-based UI). It's called Google Refine, and it solves a problem that is enormous for some people: it lets you take massive sets of "messy data" and massage them into shape so that they're uniform, make sense, and can be statistically analyzed.

The video after the jump shows a very good example, which is based on a CSV file exported from a publicly available data source (a government contract system, in this case). The data is very realistic - descriptions are inconsistent (Firm Fixed Price on some rows and FFP on other rows), and even the number formats are inconsistent (you get 0.78 on one row and a number in the millions on another row).

Google Refine lets you very easily hone in on those inconsistencies and fix them in a myriad of ways. This is an important data tool because those heaps of messy data are often public records, which are available but not transparent; being able to quickly analyze them could expose some very interesting patterns and anomalies in the way that public institutions and governments behave.

TeamViewer 6 for Android now available

Just last week, the Teamviewer 6 beta arrived for Windows users. With the arrival of my first Android device in the mail, I had hoped it wouldn't be too long before the crew released a beta for Android -- and today my waiting as at an end. Teamviewer is now available for installation on your Android device, and it's a welcome addition to my remote support arsenal.

Functionality is every bit as good as the iOS version I looked at a while back -- in fact, I even wrote part of this post on my Windows 7 laptop via my Droid using TeamViewer. Mouse control is smooth, zooming and changing the remote desktop's screen resolution is a breeze, and the UI includes buttons for sending specials keys like Windows, control, and alt. It's much easier to manage a 23" inch desktop via a 4" mobile screen than you would think using TeamViewer for Android.

We'll have a full review once TeamViewer 6 becomes available in the Market. Check out additional images of the beta in action after the break!

UberTwitter beta arrives on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

UberTwitter, the definitive BlackBerry Twitter app, has finally made the leap to iOS. The app bears the beta moniker, but Engadget seems to think that the final release will be as soon as December.

UberTwitter, other than being a very polished app, only really has one unique feature: UberView (please forgive my continuing lack of umlauts). UberView, with a quick flick of the phone into landscape orientation, shows you a preview of links contained in tweets -- handy for when you don't want to open up a browser, or indeed expose your iDevice to potentially malicious websites.

Other than that, UberTwitter for iOS provides the usual slew of Twitter miscellany: tweet pictures, add your location, change your avatar, send Direct Messages (!!!) and more.

Logitech Revue about to get a much-needed update to its Netflix app

One of the biggest disappointments when we first fired up the Logitech Revue was the Netflix app. You can watch anything in your Instant Queue, but that's it. Nothing else. Sad panda. But it looks like there's another update in the works that brings a fully functional Netflix to Google TV.

The new build -- KA1X-20101122.184803.user-b41730 -- is dated Nov. 22. The last update, dated Oct. 27, started rolling out around Nov. 2, so we should be seeing this one anytime now.
