Groupon Said To Be Valued At, Like, $15 Billion

Ready for more "Groupon is worth what?!" kind of reactions? The New York Times is reporting that the daily deals site has been seriously discussing going public with Wall Streeters this week, with a rumored IPO time sometime in Spring. The report also amps Groupon's valuation at more than double the $6 billion Google had rumored to be offering for the company just months ago, at about $15 billion "or more."

Hotmail missing email problem was caused by automated test malfunction

hotmail missing email Recently, several thousand users began reporting a problem with their Hotmail inboxes. Messages -- and sometimes entire folders -- had vanished from their Inboxes. Microsoft managed to restore everything in five days, but what exactly went wrong? And what -- if anything -- were they doing to make sure something like this didn't happen again?

The Hotmail team has since posted an explanation. As part of their regular monitoring and maintenance, Hotmail runs certain automated test scripts -- one of which got a bit carried away. Normally the script manipulates a set of test accounts created by the Hotmail team. This time, however, it accidentally messed with the directory information of up to 17,000 users.

The blog post points out that no email messages or folders were ever actually deleted -- Hotmail simply couldn't associate those users with their inboxes. The problem was protracted because Hotmail's support ticketing system didn't place a high priority on initial reports since there were so few, and because this wasn't a previously-known problem.

To make sure this situation doesn't occur again, Microsoft has tweaked its scripts and the ticketing system. Now, when multiple users report data loss, their tickets will automatically be tagged as high priority and demand immediate attention. Microsoft has also pledged to update its feedback system in order to improve communication with users.

Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515 Review

I?ve had nothing but laptops for several years now, and I?ll never go back to desktop computers. About the only thing I don?t like about laptops is their typically wimpy speakers. Sony outs CLM-V55 video monitor for interchangeable lens cameras

To take John McEnroe's famous quote badly out of context, you cannot be serious about video recording without giving your devices a nice big display for videographers to monitor their recordings through. Sony's clearly in agreement and has today revealed the CLM-V55, a 5-inch clip-on unit for its interchangeable lens cameras, that provides WVGA resolution, tilt / swivel adjustments, and color peaking plus pixel magnification to make sure focus is just how you like it. The primary beneficiaries of this would be those delightful A33 and A55 siblings, which strive to combine the fast autofocus of a camcorder with the image quality of a DSLR, along with the NEX-VG10, an all-out camcorder that can nonetheless exchange its lenses and even exploit Alpha-mount glass via an adapter. You can see it outfitted with the V55 after the break, right next to the full press release. Launch is expected in March at an as yet unannounced price.

Samsung Mobile boss confirms Galaxy S successor, Galaxy Tab roadmap being announced next month

Far be it from Samsung to announce an extremely high-end US-only smartphone -- the Infuse 4G for AT&T, pictured above -- without a global equivalent, and it's starting to look like we'll get that equivalent in just a few weeks' time. JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile, has now gone on record saying that we'll get a new Galaxy S device at Mobile World Congress in February that'll feature Gingerbread, a dual-core processor (whether that's Tegra 2, Orion, or something else entirely, we're not sure), and the Super AMOLED Plus technology that debuted at CES last week. Shin's also saying that we'll get a peek at Sammy's plans for the Galaxy Tab line for 2011, which we're guessing will include that lovely 7-inch Super AMOLED display that's been kicking around. Should be an exciting show, to say the least.

WSJ confirms our scoop that Verizon's changing its upgrade policy

Verizon Upgrade Policy

Guess that makes it official, folks. The Wall Street Journal has confirmed the news we broke more than a week ago -- that Verizon's ending the NE2 program and that customers on two-year contracts will have to go through 20 months of their 24-month contract before upgrading. Couple more days, and they can confirm the one we broke about Verizon switching to a 14-day return policy. In the meantime, we ask that you all direct your displeasure in the comments below. Namaste.
